What’s the value in company values?

Stone Junction has a love hate relationship with company values. Why? Because most companies only pay lip service to them, making them a useless list of words that no one pays attention to.

By Leah Elston-Thompson, senior account executive

The Business Dictionary defines company values as “the operating philosophies or principles that guide an organisation’s internal conduct as well as its relationship with its customers, partners and shareholders.” Values should summarise a company’s beliefs, identity and approach.

What do we value?
Stone Junction’s values were decided during a company-wide meeting with our business coach. Each member of the team contributed what was important to them, summarised the main reasons they come to work and more. Because each employee was able to contribute to the decision, Stone Junction’s values reflect the whole business, they aren’t just arbitrarily chosen to populate a web page.

Stone Junction’s values include:
Knowledgeable and credible
Fun, happy = want to be here
Creative and innovative
Helpful, reliable and honest
Hardworking, efficient and effective
Passion + character
Dogwithabone
Teamwork
Deliver wow!

Having values that employees understand, use and believe in is crucial for them to be successful. If they do, your internal and external messaging can be aligned.

Why bother?
Company values can be extremely useful, providing they are chosen in a pragmatic and positive way. By doing this, companies can create a framework for decision making at all levels, from new hires to setting up whole new offices. Team members are all encouraged to consider company values when making decisions and many of us have them printed out and on our desks.

You can also use your company values to form the basis of your marketing messaging. Every piece of content you write should come back to its cornerstone message and its values. This will help you to maintain the appropriate tone of voice for your company, but also ensure that the content you are writing is relevant, authoritative and useful.
