Making work experience matter

Everyone has a story about a work experience placement. The term has become synonymous with something compulsory yet boring; a week spent filing or stuffing envelopes, a sentence to add onto your CV. However, with current pressures on graduates to find work in an increasingly tough job market, the time has come for work experience to take on a new meaning.

Every student knows the pressure, as well as delight, that graduation can bring. Finding a job post-university is becoming harder, and it’s difficult to know what career to pursue, let alone how to develop the skills required.

That’s where work experience, done in the right way, comes into play. When students are given meaningful and realistic tasks, they better understand what a day in that job is like. How can a prospective employee know if a career is right for them if they haven’t actually tried the work out for themselves?

At Stone Junction, we do things a little differently. We believe that future PR hopefuls should be given responsibility and client-led work that means they learn new skills and get valuable experience. By providing hands-on work placements, students come to understand exactly what a job in PR entails and can make informed decisions that affect their future.

We benefit from the placement too. By teaching trainees PR skills and giving them real client tasks, they contribute to the company and our day-to-day work. Providing on the job training means we see PR from a new perspective as a taught skill and involving students in client work can bring fresh ideas to our campaigns.

After all, the best way to learn is to teach.
