Manage your local business presence on Google

Facebook? Check. Website? Check. But wait, does Google know your opening hours? Google is often the first port of call when searching for a product or service, but not all customers will click through to your website to find the information they need.

Imagine if every time a person searched for your business, Google said your premises were closed? Failing to update your company’s opening hours is an easy mistake to make, but it happens more often than you might think.

The knowledge panel on Google appears on the right-hand side of the regular search engine results. If you search for a local business, you'll often see this appear. It shows the business name, logo, location, website and crucially, hours of operation. But, how does that information get there, and how can you edit this?

Have a go and search for yourself. If you spot an error in your knowledge panel, you can simply click 'suggest an edit'. After you have suggested the change, Google will review and approve this update. You may have to verify that you are the business owner, which can be done over the phone or by e-mail.

But wait, what if your business doesn't appear in the knowledge panel after searching for your business and location? Head over to Google My Business. This is Google's own dashboard for managing your online presence. It's free to use and allows you to update different fields easily. Providing and updating business information can help your business’s local ranking on Google and enhance your presence in search and Maps.

Remember though, this is a local tool. The knowledge panel result will only occur based on the relevance and location of the searcher's query. You should also remember that local presence on Google can be unpredictable at times, so maintaining a well optimised website is also important.
